Title: 2009.12 - Vintage
Post by: Dr Jenfold on December 01, 2009, 12:45:40 PM
The votes are in and the winner of the first every Sims 3 monthly theme is....

Vintage.

Now of course it's time to make stuff inspired by the theme. Contributions can be anything from patterns, clothes, objects, lots or anything else, all they have to do is fit in with the theme in some way.

I look forward to seeing what people dream up!  ;)

Sweet! Now to come up with some ideas...

If I can find the space to reinstall TS3 (awfully large I tell ya... horrified at the thought of having 8 EPs on it, it'll be like 50 GBs) I will surely work on something for the theme.

Well, I just want to solve a little doubt I have, maybe it is a languaje problem.
Which of this would you consider "vintage"
I would say that the second one is vintage, but I want to make sure, because I don't really understand too good the difference between retro and vintage.

Is this hair by nouk a vintage hair?

I'm sorry for being an ass pain, but I had a big confusion.

I'd say that those are all pretty vintage/antique.  The hair has a pinch of Edwardian flair rather than modern/contemporary aesthetic.

Title: Re: December Theme : Vintage
Post by: Dr Jenfold on December 03, 2009, 01:59:08 PM
Honestly as long as you can justify whatever you've made as being vintage then we'd like to see it. The purpose of the theme is to be as wide ranging as possible and vintage means different things to different people so lots of things will be acceptable.

GAH I love that hair! <33 I'm getting a thing for curly hair.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten around to making anything yet. I'm not sure the selection for vintage sims wear is all that great. :C

If you're thinking of converting that hair to TS3 I ask of you, PLEASE DO! I could make a TS3 version of my lovely Emilie with that  :D

I thought I'd start by converting the vintage books I'd done for TS2 to TS3.

There are five packages in this set, which includes three book groupings and two single books.  They're found under decorative - misc, and range in price from 25 for the single books to 45 for the sets.  All of them have custom icons.  These aren't recolorable (seemed really pointless!), and don't do anything but sit there and look pretty.  I do have World Adventures, but these should work even if you don't.  I hope.

Do what ye want with these, just keep it off paysites.  And fears that creep about my flame evanesce, until the dawn calls them home again bearing thoughts of you.

(Just for the record, these are the very first objects I've made for TS3.  Hopefully they won't cause problems, but if you do run into any issues, pleasepleaseplease let me know so I can fix it!)

Aikea, I love those books! Thank you!

Pinketamine, those patterns are both definitely vintage. I like the first one a lot, it's very 50s/60s.

Title: Re: December Theme : Vintage
Post by: girlfromverona on December 04, 2009, 06:37:07 AM
You totally rule, Aikea! Those books are awesome.  :D

pinketamine: I'd definitely call both those patterns vintage. As far as I'm concerned, vintage is anything old, be it from 100 years ago or 20 years ago.

AWW BOOKS! Thank you Aikea! :) Just a question, I am assuming since these were made in your game and you have WA, you used updated tools? Just wondering because I read that the older versions of the tools does wonky stuff to the .package files.

I have a small set of five patterns. I'm now working on more, anyway, I'll submit them as soon as I can test then on my boyfriend's PC (the good one), which has WA installed, so I can test if they work with the expansion.

I really wanted to contribute, so...

I found this dress that I thought was kinda retro-vintage-y at  the time, and converted it into a clothing texture. Now it just looks... cute, but not really vintage. (I suppose if you put vintage patterns on it, it would look more vintage?) Anyways, I spent forever on it, so I'mma upload it anyway.

Thanks! (it's a maxis mesh though, so I can only take credit for the retexture) You can't actually see most of the work I did because I didn't make the contrast high enough x-x;

This is my very first little contribution to this monthly theme.
It is a set of five patterns, which you can see here. You have them named in case you just want some of them.

This is a coffin-kickers sized picture.

I have included a painting too, because I saw it on the internet and looked funny to me.

If at least one person will like it. ^^

But I noticed many of the ones in France are mostly unfurnished. One or two floors may be done, but the others will be empty, and they're all quite bare, which is why I thought of it. Following the vintage look for them will also help them blend in with their neighbors.

Alrighty, here is another attempt by me to make something decent and usable. Please don't kill me... D:

I made a vintage evening gown with pics from here: http://www.coutureallure.com/products/vintage-60s-silk-chiffon-evening-gown-att-sarmi-small-bust-36

The mesh is from here: http://www.lianasims3.net/

Everything else is hours of hitting the CTU with a hammer done by me. C:

Seam and discolorations. (seam courtesy of me, discolorations are a mesh problem that I can't seem to fix, but I've contacted Liana and there's a small chance that she'll know what to do)

Another mesh-related problem that occurs when the sim is standing still with feet apart. There's nothing I can do about this.

DOWNLOAD:

It has occured to me that I can redo this on a maxis mesh, but that would be more work, so if you like this and would like to see a higher-quality maxis version, please let me know.

Also, if you have any suggestions for improvement, I would love to hear them. (Be nice though- this process for me is almost completely blind and there're only so many times I can load the game to check my work)

After much deliberation, I finally decided what to make for my first vintage offering: vinyl record clocks! Something I've wanted in the game for ages but until recently had no idea how to make. Now I can mesh, the sky's the limit, really!  :D

The clocks really work and the hands are recolourable. Plus they all show up under one menu item. I've included both a package and a Sims3Pack in the zip file, so you can choose which one you'd rather put in your game. Hope you like them, and please, let me know if you find any problems at all.

I loved this mesh in TS2, and thought it would be perfect to convert for this month's theme.  They also just so happen to go pretty damned good with girlfromverona's clocks.   :P

All three styles are available in the singular package file.  The David Bowie records are the default, and the other two sets can be accessed via CAST (think TS2 recolors).  They have a custom thumbnail, are found under decorative - misc, and cost 35 simoleons.  Their only function is to sit there and take up space.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to finish that house I was redecorating now... or anyone who uses it will also have to use awesomemod so all the CC will work/show up the way the patch messed a lot of stuff up. I had the top floor mostly done. :/ ..

I would be interested too. I absolutely fail at making houses, and I love the ones other people make. However, I don't use awesomemod, nor do I think I will. (vanilla game, with the exception of CAS, pattern, and object cc, which is already making my game slow)

So I dunno if you would make a version that doesn't need awesomemod? I guess that's not possible.

EDITZ: Thank you to all of the people who downloaded my vintage gown! I have now fixed the discoloration problems, and it only looks like, 1000000000x better. >_<

Whew. I think that's everything. Again, if you don't have some of these, it won't break your game, they just won't show up.

Download the Crazy Cat Lady's House (http://www.mediafire.com/?jwvmumoymij/)

Since I wanted to play-test this house, I went ahead and made a crazy cat lady to live in it, so I thought I'd upload her as well:

Download Myrna Phurbahl, Crazy Cat Lady (http://www.mediafire.com/?kzcwfnq3unz)
Download Myrna Phurbahl, Crazy Cat Lady(Sims3pack version) (http://www.mediafire.com/?ygmhytk54i2)

Traits: Absent Minded, Clumsy, Dislikes Children, Frugal, Insane.

CC:
From Kitty Klan (http://www.kittyklan.com/) - Mismatched short socks, in the Boutique section
Quite a few of the patterns linked above were used for her clothes.
I also use aikea-guinea's default replacement skintone and eyes from Club Crimsyn (http://www.clubcrimsyn.com/ts3/index.html)

Omg Century eyes, I lol'D! Are they in Sims3pack files though? I'mma download them soon so I can use them when I start playing again. ^_^ I  NEED more houses, and the cat lady is awesome, Although I dunno if I'mma play her ever, I just want her. x3

Thank you, all of you. I can't believe how long I worked on it - I think it's all the patterns. I spent a lot of time changing the colors to just what I wanted.

I probably forgot to mention, though - the reason Myrna's crazy? All the cats are missing.

Emhpb - the house is a Sims3pack, I'm not sure but I think that's the only way to share a house. I'll go ahead and add a Sims3pack version of Myrna.
+++edit+++
Added the Sims3pack version of Myrna. The nice thing about TS3 is you don't have to play her - just put her in your neighborhood and let her run around and be crazy.  :D

YES,  I simply don't understand why they weren't included (well wait... they would have earned less money).
I miss pets and aliens SO much.
Century eyes, I really like that house :)

I made an Eliza Doolittle sim. (That's vintage, right?) ^_^ I have no in-game pics yet, and my graphics suck so they would suck anyway. ;B Would anyone like to take pics for me? Or do you suppose CAS pics would be alright?

Title: Re: December Theme : Vintage
Post by: evelyn on December 23, 2009, 12:25:13 AM
I think CAS pics are fine. Is it possible to change your options to high just for pictures? Would that make a difference? I feel badly for you sometimes because it is obvious you put a lot of work into your projects but they are so blurry.
I would take pics for you but I'm behind on my SS gift. We have until the 28th right? *cries*

Title: Re: December Theme : Vintage
Post by: Emhpb on December 23, 2009, 12:32:36 AM
I do have my settings on high. Dxxxx *kicks stupid mac* This computer is SUPPOSED to have a good graphics card. But apparently Macs are not good at game graphics?

*sigh* I do put a lot of work into projects, but it would be so much better if I had a windows, as I could use CTU's preview, and work directly on the DDS files. I suspect I'm loosing quality by way of file conversion. ;/

& I think if you're really stressed for time, you can send after the 28th, as long as you tell Bosie so she can let your SS know.

Post by: evelyn on December 23, 2009, 01:12:07 PM
Oh, I'll be done in a day or so. It just seems like everyone sent theirs out the first day. And yes, it's difficult to make CC on a mac. I love them, and have one at work, but one of the reasons I have a PC at home is because of games.

Title: Re: December Theme : Vintage
Post by: Emhpb on December 23, 2009, 04:03:47 PM
I'm sure plenty of people haven't sent theirs out yet. Everyone is so busy atm. ^_^

Every time I make a piece of CC, I feel so proud of myself for just that reason. ;B

*Anything with an Asterisk at the end will probably package itself with the house, so you don't need to download it twice. Probably. Check first to see if it did download at least.

This also requires the WA EP. I'm not sure what will happen if someone without it tries to install it, but I assume that it would probably not install.

Playtested, added few surprises... And the spare room off the kitchen makes a nice entrance to a cellar if you wish to add one. I just didn't feel like decorating a basement since my sims basements either look like storage areas or museums. Also, the fireplace has already been upgraded to fireproof, so don't be afraid to use it.

*rolls around* Still need someone to take previews for my My Fair Lady sim...My graphics are still suck at the highest levels, but I've decided that I can't very well upload her without in-game pics, and expect people to get a fair idea of what she will look like in-game.

Here's a  CAS pic:
I'm not FABULOUS at creating sim-likenesses, but I think I got the general idea.

And here are her clothes:
Really it would be ideal if someone with these clothes (skirt and top are from EA store, hat is from parsimonious, and shoes are from lilisims, but the shoes are not essential) can take previews, but if you can dress her in something similar, that's just as good. ;3

So if anyone wants to help, let me know and I'll pm you the download. ;>

Ah, but you built yours! I just took a house from WA and gave the interior a serious makeover. But I'm glad you liked it. ^^

Oh skeletal! Thank you! So much work!

OK another little thing from me. Vintage rugs, not recolorable alas. One file contains all six.

I'm going to have to pull this down for a bit, I have to fix a glitch in the file ( 2 rugs aren't showing up for some reason).
Thanks to HeyBubbe for the heads up.

Ok fixed now. I added a couple more rugs.

Oh wow, there is just so much that's good here and it makes me want to learn how to mesh too.  :)

Moryrie, I remembered seeing Amjoie's paintings on another forum a few weeks ago; her stuff still seems to be there - mayhap she moved? Here's the link: http://www.customsims3.com/forum1/YaBB.pl?board=Amjoie

Thank you so much Gelfling! Now I can add that link and I won't feel so rotten about not having been able to replace those paintings with ones I knew of!
